Florida Hospital Waterman Awarded an “A” for Patient Safety by Hospital Safety Score^SM

Tavares, FL:  Florida Hospital Waterman was honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score^SM by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The Hospital Safety Score^SM was calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel using publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. U.S. hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their safety.

“It’s The Leapfrog Group’s goal to give patients the information they need and deserve before even entering a hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the hospitals that earned an ‘A’ and we look forward to the day when all hospitals in the U.S. will earn the highest scores for putting patient safety first.”

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. 

“We are very excited about Florida Hospital Waterman’s “A” grade, which is reflective of our ongoing commitment to keeping patients safe by providing the highest quality of care,” says Ken Mattison, President and CEO.  “It is most gratifying to be recognized in this way for fulfilling our mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ.”

Appreciation

We are grateful to the Lake County community, and are blessed with a strong infrastructure. Firefighters and law enforcement respond quickly to our emergencies. Local government plans for our future with roads, schools, and whatever we need to meet our growth. There are myriads of other unsung heroes who keep life going here in Lake County. Our employees here at Florida Hospital Waterman are part of that group who provide a safe environment for those who are fighting disease. Helping the sick in our county to recover is one of the most meaningful jobs I can think of and I want to thank each of our caregivers and support staff for your diligence. Lives have been saved in hospitals across the continents because of the medical information available through modern technology. Good morning, my name is Ken Mattison, hospital president. I routinely hear stories of how our hospital chaplains have made a difference in the lives of our patients who are facing various crises.  At Florida Hospital Waterman we give whole-person care. Our lives are more than just our bodies. We are social, spiritual, and emotional beings who need to give careful attention to all of these areas.  Chaplains are clinically trained to meet people at the crisis point of a wide range of human experiences.  I thank God for their presence and work among all of us here at Florida Hospital Waterman.

Good morning, my name is Ken Mattison, hospital president. The hubble telescope has opened the heavens. Light pollution dims our experience of the stars but the hubble gives us breathtaking glimpses of colorful planets, constellations, and galaxies. I am so awed by the grandeur of it all, that I understand a little of what King David meant in the Psalms when he said, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” May our hearts overflow with gratitude to our Creator today!

Good morning, my name is Ken Mattison, hospital president. I enjoy being a shade tree mechanic. I have learned that simple care can keep my car in good shape--clean oil in the engine, air in the tires, wax on the body and water in the radiator, to name a few.  We are born with a human body; it is the only one we are given. And the truth is, there are very simple lifestyle issues that will make us run better--eating appropriate amounts of healthy foods, sleeping enough, exercising consistently, keeping a positive outlook and trusting God. Sometimes easy things are hard to do but it’s possible and it’s worth it!  May God help us care for our personal gift of life.
